This isn't a silly question! But isn't a straight forward question to answer either - the two feed into each other. In a nutshell, behaviour cases are used to modify a dogs emotional response and consequently change unwanted behaviour. (e.g. changing a dog's aggressive reaction toward another dog). Training is teaching a dog a new skill (e.g. walking nicely on the lead). It can be confusing to know exactly what service you need, but don't worry, I'm here to help you figure that out. Generally, behaviour cases involve more work and have a longer process to resolve.
What's the difference between behaviour and training?

Vet Referral
A discussion between your vet and I, to assess whether or not your dogs behaviour problem is caused by an underlying medical condition. Vet referral forms are simple to complete and will be sent via email after the initial enquiry.
As a Clinical Animal Behaviourist, working on veterinary referral ensures that behavioural cases are approached with a comprehensive understanding of the dog's physical and psychological health. Many behaviour issues have an underlying medical component—pain, hormonal imbalances, neurological conditions, or even discomfort from untreated conditions—that can manifest as problematic behaviours. By working on vet referral, I ensure that any medical factors are ruled out or appropriately managed before implementing behavioural interventions. This distinguishes Clinical Animal Behaviourists from dog trainers, as our role encompasses a deeper scientific and clinical approach to behaviour modification. Additionally, Clinical Animal Behaviourists undergo extensive academic training—to postgraduate level—and accreditation processes that require rigorous assessments and adherence to professional standards. This level of expertise ensures that behavioural support is rooted in science, ethics, and welfare, providing owners with tailored interventions that address the underlying causes of their dog's behaviour, rather than just managing symptoms through training alone.
